Language Arts

Laurel Hall uses the most successful methods of both the Phonetic and the Literature Based Approaches to create a meaningful and integrated Balanced Language experience for your child. Balanced Language uses the best of the whole language method with phonics taught as part of skill based vocabulary lessons. Phonics, grammar, composition and spelling are addressed in the student's reading and writing experiences.

Math

Math incorporates a variety of manipulative as students at this level explore and master concepts from basic math facts to problem solving. Computational skills, geometry, fractions, measurement, time, money and place value are just some of the concepts taught.

Science and Social Studies

Social studies and science curriculum are integrated with the Language Art themes at this time. Field trips coincide at each level to enhance these areas. The fourth grade study of early California culminates in a trip to Sacramento and San Francisco. The fifth grade study of astronomy is enhanced by a 3 day trip to AstroCamp in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Physical Education

Physical Education in the Elementary grades emphasizes exercising the body and mind, developing large and fine motor skills and building skills that use all muscles in the body. Students meet with a specialist for PE.

Foreign Language

All children in Grades K through 5 receive Spanish instructions with the emphasis focused on building conversational skills.
