Middle School Grades 6 through 8
Language Arts
Our middle school grades use a literature based approach to language, integrating it with sciences, math, and social studies. Our program is departmentalized, which serves as preparation for public and private high schools.
Math
Our math program allows students to recognize and appreciate the vital role of mathematics plays in the real world. We strive to make mathematics useful and accessible to every student. Laurel Hall offers programs in pre-algebra and algebra.
Science and Social Studies
Middle school grades' science includes a study of living things on earth, journey into space, simple organisms, microbiology, astronomy, chemistry, physics, oceanography, and genetics. All students participate in an annual school science fair, where some projects are chosen to participate in the Los Angeles County Science Fair.
History and Social Studies
Our middle school World History and American History curriculum are a compilation of: critical thinking and the relationship of historical events that relate to our past and our present existence. The textbooks maintain consistency from seventh to eighth grade as to historical chronology of European and American events. The time frame ranges from the Roman Empire to present day. All cultures are represented and discussed through history and current events.
Foreign Language
To prepare for high school foreign language courses, sixth - eighth grade students receive Spanish or French instruction.
Off-Campus Educational Opportunities
Grade 6 - Alpine Conference Center studying environmental education team cooperation. Grade 7 - Catalina Island Marine Institute studying marine biology. Grade 8 - Washington, D.C. and the historic east coast to study our country's heritage.
Opportunity Period
In grades 6 through 8, the students may choose from a variety of courses which include: Literature, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Cheerleading, Drama, School Yearbook, LHTV, the school newsletter, and many others. These Opportunity Period classes are selected by the students based on their interest. Most classes last for one trimester.
Religious Education
The sixth grade studies the New Testament and focuses on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and the beginnings of the Christian Church.
The seventh and eighth grade program focuses on what it means to be a Christian and how to live a life of faith in response to God's grace.
